Chill to around 10°C and pour into a white wine glass rather than a flute. Grilled lobster, or a fillet of fish simply prepared with olive oil, suits its finesse, and regional cheeses work well too.
- 100% Chardonnay blanc de blancs
- Top cuvée from Champagne Deutz, Aÿ
- Made only in the better years
The style is built on finesse and a clean, saline finish. Tasters of recent releases have noted white apple, and with bottle age the wine can move towards grilled, brioche and hazelnut flavours with a very long finish.
The name comes from a small bronze statue of Cupid, a smiling Amor, that greets visitors to the house in Aÿ. It gives this wine a lighter touch than many top Champagnes, though the winemaking behind it is serious. The house describes the cuvée as made from exceptional fruit and given extended ageing, and it presents the wine as an expression of its spirit of freedom.
Deutz has been in Aÿ since 1838, when William Deutz and Pierre-Hubert Geldermann founded the firm. Today the house belongs to the Rouzaud family, who also own Louis Roederer, and Caroline Latrive is the cellar master. Deutz says it favours precision over ease and longevity over immediate effect, an approach that suits a wine designed for bottle age.
White, porous chalk soils give Deutz wines their minerality, and that matters most in a pure Chardonnay, where there is no red grape to add weight. Because this is a vintage-dated wine, the year on the bottle you receive will shape its exact character, so treat these notes as a guide to the style.
A bottle for fans of Chardonnay-based Champagne, or for someone marking an anniversary with a wine whose name, Amour, fits the moment.
