About Bacardi
Bacardi was founded in Santiago de Cuba in 1862 by Facundo Bacardi Masso, who set out to make a lighter, smoother style of rum. His approach used a specific yeast strain, charcoal filtering and ageing in white oak barrels. The fruit bat on every bottle dates back to the original distillery. After leaving Cuba, the company made Puerto Rico its main home, and its distillery near San Juan produces much of the rum sold around the world today.
How to Enjoy Bacardi
Bacardi Superior is made for cocktails: a mojito with mint, lime and soda, a daiquiri with lime and sugar, or a simple rum and cola. Gold and spiced rums suit ginger beer and cola, while the 8 and 10 year old rums shine neat or over a single ice cube. Serve the RTD cans well chilled. Aged rums pair nicely with dark chocolate, and the white rum suits grilled seafood and tropical fruit.
Bacardi FAQs
Where is Bacardi rum made?
Bacardi rum is mainly made in Puerto Rico, at the company's distillery near San Juan. The brand was founded in Santiago de Cuba in 1862 and moved its main production to Puerto Rico after leaving Cuba.
What is the difference between Bacardi Superior and Bacardi Gold?
Bacardi Superior is a light white rum, filtered for a clean, crisp taste that suits mojitos and daiquiris. Bacardi Gold, also called Carta Oro, is aged longer in oak, giving a golden colour and softer vanilla and caramel notes.
Is Bacardi rum good for cocktails?
Yes, Bacardi rum is one of the most used rums in cocktails. The white Superior is the classic choice for mojitos and daiquiris, while Gold, Black and Spiced work well with cola, ginger beer and in punches.
Why is there a bat on Bacardi bottles?
The bat on Bacardi bottles comes from the brand's first distillery in Cuba, where fruit bats lived in the rafters. The founder's wife suggested the bat as the emblem, and it has stayed on the label ever since.
