About Gekkeikan
Gekkeikan was founded in 1637 by Jiemon Okura in Fushimi, a Kyoto district known for its soft spring water and many breweries. The company first sold its sake as Tama no Izumi, and the name Gekkeikan means laurel wreath. Its Okura Sake Museum is housed in a brewery building from 1909.
How to Enjoy Gekkeikan
Serve Daiginjo and Junmai Daiginjo chilled in a wine glass to enjoy their fruity, floral aroma. Junmai can be served chilled, at room temperature or gently warmed. Nigori is cloudy and creamy, so shake it gently and serve it cold. Pair sake with sushi, sashimi, tempura, grilled chicken or mild cheeses.
Gekkeikan FAQs
Where is Gekkeikan sake made?
Gekkeikan was founded in Fushimi, in the south of Kyoto, Japan, in 1637, and the company is still based there. Fushimi is a historic sake district, valued for its soft underground water.
What is the difference between Junmai and Daiginjo?
Junmai means the sake is made only from rice, water, koji and yeast, with no added alcohol. Daiginjo uses rice polished down further, giving a lighter, more fragrant sake that is best served chilled.
What is Nigori sake?
Nigori is a cloudy sake that is only coarsely filtered, so some rice solids stay in the bottle. It tastes softer, creamier and often sweeter than clear sake. Shake gently before pouring and serve it well chilled.
