About Laphroaig
Laphroaig was founded in 1815 by the Johnston brothers on the south coast of Islay. It is one of the few distilleries that still malts some of its own barley on floor maltings, drying it over local peat. Most of its whisky is matured in ex-bourbon barrels.
How to Enjoy Laphroaig
Taste Laphroaig neat, then add a few drops of water to bring out the sweetness under the smoke. A Laphroaig and soda highball is a good way to try it for the first time. It pairs well with oysters, smoked meats, blue cheese and dark chocolate.
Laphroaig FAQs
What does Laphroaig taste like?
Laphroaig is very smoky and peaty, with notes often described as iodine, seaweed and sea salt, balanced by vanilla and sweetness from bourbon casks. It is one of the boldest flavour styles in Scotch whisky.
What is Laphroaig Quarter Cask?
Quarter Cask is Laphroaig that is moved into small casks, about a quarter the size of a standard barrel, for a final period of maturation. The extra wood contact gives a sweeter, creamier and more oak-driven whisky.
Where is Laphroaig made?
Laphroaig is made at its distillery near Port Ellen on the south coast of the Isle of Islay in Scotland, close to Lagavulin and Ardbeg. It has been distilling there since 1815.
