About Metaxa

Spyros Metaxa founded the company in 1888. Metaxa is made by ageing wine distillates in oak, then blending them with aged Muscat wines from Aegean islands such as Samos, together with a secret mix of Mediterranean botanicals. The 7 Star bottle shape, the Amphora, dates from the 1960s.

How to Enjoy Metaxa

Mix Metaxa 5 Star with ginger ale or tonic and an orange twist. The 7 Star suits sipping over ice or in a Sidecar. Sip the 12 Star neat after dinner with baklava, dark chocolate, dried figs or nuts.

Metaxa FAQs

Is Metaxa a brandy?

Metaxa is often sold as a brandy, but the producer describes it as a unique amber spirit. It blends aged wine distillates with Muscat wine and botanicals, which sets it apart from traditional brandy.

What do the stars on Metaxa mean?

The stars mark different blends in the range. More stars indicate a richer, more mature blend, so 12 Star is fuller and more complex than 5 Star or 7 Star.

How do you drink Metaxa?

Metaxa 5 Star works with ginger ale or tonic. The 7 Star can be sipped over ice or used in cocktails, and the 12 Star is best enjoyed neat after a meal.
