About Penfolds
Penfolds was founded in 1844 by Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold and his wife Mary at Magill, on the edge of Adelaide in South Australia. In the 1950s chief winemaker Max Schubert created Grange, a Shiraz-based red that became Australia's most famous wine, and Max's Shiraz is named in his honour. Penfolds is famous for multi-regional blending, drawing fruit from several South Australian regions, and its Bin numbers originally referred to the cellar bins where wines were stored.
How to Enjoy Penfolds
Serve Penfolds reds at room temperature, and decant Grange, St Henri and Bin 389 when young. Shiraz and Shiraz Cabernet suit lamb, beef and barbecue, Cabernet Sauvignon pairs with steak and hard cheese, and Bin 23 Pinot Noir with duck or salmon. Chill the Champagne for oysters or celebrations. Serve Club Tawny and Father lightly chilled or at room temperature with blue cheese, nuts or fruit cake.
Penfolds FAQs
Where is Penfolds wine from?
Penfolds wine is from South Australia. The winery was founded at Magill near Adelaide in 1844, and most of its reds blend fruit from regions such as the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra. Penfolds Champagne is made in France.
What is Penfolds Grange?
Penfolds Grange is Australia's most famous red wine, a powerful, long-lived Shiraz-based blend first made by Max Schubert in the 1950s. It is made to age for decades and is widely collected.
What does Bin mean on Penfolds wine?
Bin on Penfolds wine refers to the cellar bin where a wine was first stored during ageing. The numbers stuck as wine names, so Bin 389, Bin 128 and Bin 23 each identify a particular style.
Should I decant Penfolds wine?
Decanting helps young, full-bodied Penfolds reds like Grange, St Henri and Bin 389 open up, and helps separate sediment in older bottles. Koonunga Hill and Max's wines can usually be poured straight from the bottle.
