Glenmorangie 12YO 1L is a Highland single malt Scotch whisky, sold under the name Glenmorangie The Original. It is aged for 12 years in bourbon casks and bottled at 40% ABV. The label calls it The Original 12 Years Old, and it took over as the core Glenmorangie bottling from the earlier 10 year old.
That change came out of tasting trials. Glenmorangie found the whisky gained extra silkiness, sweetness and complexity at 12 years, so the two additional years in wood became the new standard. The extra wood contact brings more depth and a softer texture.
The distillery was founded in 1843 by the Matheson brothers on the Dornoch Firth, near Tain in the northern Highlands. It is known for very tall copper stills, with necks reaching 5.14 metres, which mean only the lighter vapours reach the top and pass over as spirit. That gives Glenmorangie its delicate, fruit-led style, which American oak bourbon casks then build on with vanilla. The whisky is distilled twice, in the usual way for Scotch single malt.
