Glenlivet 18YO 40% 700ml is an 18 year old Speyside single malt from The Glenlivet Distillery, matured in a combination of American oak ex-bourbon casks and ex-sherry casks. The distillery was founded by George Smith in 1824 and was the first legally licensed distillery in the Glenlivet valley.

Smith took out his licence just after the Excise Act of 1823 made legal distilling more practical, at a time when the glen was known for illicit stills and smuggled whisky. The Glenlivet name became so sought after that other distillers added it to their own labels, and the distillery eventually won the right to call itself The Glenlivet.
The 18 year old sits above the core 12 and 15 year old expressions in the range. Its mix of bourbon and sherry casks gives a balance of honeyed, fruity Speyside character and richer dried fruit and spice from the longer time in oak. Like the rest of the range, it is made from malted barley and distilled in copper pot stills at the distillery near Ballindalloch, in the heart of Speyside, before the casks are left to mature in Scotland for at least 18 years.
Pour it neat into a nosing glass and give it a moment, then try it with a few drops of water to bring out the fruit and nuttiness. It pairs well with roast pork, aged cheddar, walnuts or a simple apple dessert.

Expect honey, orange peel and baked apple on the nose with hints of toffee. The palate brings honey roasted nuts, ginger biscuit and poached fruit with some oak, leading to a long, warming finish with a touch of dark chocolate and spice.
