Description
Balvenie The Week of Peat 14 Year Old 700ml is a peated Speyside single malt from The Balvenie distillery in Dufftown, Scotland. Balvenie is better known for honeyed, unpeated whisky, but for one week each year the distillery works with peated barley, and this release is spirit from that week, matured for at least 14 years in American oak casks and bottled at 48.3% ABV without chill filtration.

The Balvenie distillery stands in Dufftown, in the heart of Speyside, and was built by William Grant in 1892 beside his Glenfiddich distillery. It is still owned by William Grant & Sons, and it is one of the very few Scottish distilleries that still runs its own traditional floor maltings, turning part of its barley by hand before it is dried in the kiln.
The Week of Peat is part of the Balvenie Stories range, which tells the background of particular whiskies made at the distillery. It replaced the earlier Peat Week bottling and shows how Balvenie’s familiar honey and vanilla character sits alongside smoke.
Pour it neat into a tulip glass and give it a few minutes, then add a few drops of water to soften the higher strength and bring out the honey and citrus. It works well after dinner with smoked salmon, blue cheese or a sticky toffee pudding.

On the nose, soft peat smoke sits over citrus, oaky vanilla and blossom honey. The palate is sweet and malty with gentle smoke, vanilla and a little spice, and the finish is long, with creamy vanilla and a final wisp of smoke.
The smoke here is drier and more herbal than the coastal, iodine style of many Islay malts, so the distillery’s sweetness is never buried.
A thoughtful choice for Balvenie fans curious about smoke, or for peat lovers who want a gentler, sweeter style, and a good gift for a single malt drinker.
