Bruichladdich is a Victorian distillery built in 1881 on the shore of Loch Indaal, on the Rhinns of Islay. After a period of closure it was brought back to life in 2001, and much of its original Victorian equipment is still in use. While Islay is famous for heavily peated whisky, Bruichladdich’s own house style is unpeated, floral and fruity, made in tall copper stills.
The Eighteen marks a coming of age for the revived distillery. It was distilled from Bruichladdich’s first ever crop of Islay-grown barley, alongside organically grown grain and varieties from the Scottish mainland. Barley matters a great deal to Bruichladdich: the distillery began working with one Islay farmer in 2004, and today around 20 farming partners grow more than half of its barley.
Every element of this whisky is traceable, from the barley varieties to the exact casks it matured in. A five digit code on the base of the back label lets drinkers look up the recipe online. Like the rest of the Bruichladdich range, it is non-chill filtered and bottled with no added colouring, and the bottle is finished with a glass stopper.
Pour it neat and give it a minute, then add a few drops of water to open up the fruit. It pairs well with seafood, a mild hard cheese or a tropical fruit dessert.
- Unpeated Islay single malt from Bruichladdich
- Mostly ex-bourbon casks with some wine casks
- Aged 18 years, 50% ABV
On the nose expect honey, butterscotch and orange citrus. The palate is full bodied and fragrant, with a medley of tropical fruits and toasted, mellow oak lingering through the finish.
A rewarding bottle for single malt drinkers who prefer fruit to smoke, or a thoughtful gift for an Islay fan.
