Octomore is Bruichladdich’s most heavily peated whisky and is released as an annual series. The name comes from Octomore farm, near the village of Port Charlotte, close to the distillery. Each release is distilled, matured and bottled on Islay, and Bruichladdich describes the range as whisky that seems too young, too strong and too peaty, yet works. Series 16 was named The Impossible Equation for that reason.
Within each series, the .1 bottling is built on Scottish barley and first-fill bourbon casks, so it acts as a reference point for the year. Peat level here is measured in phenol parts per million on the malted barley, and at 101.4 PPM it is far above most peated Scotch. Young age and high strength are deliberate: a five-year-old spirit at near cask strength keeps the barley sweetness and smoke very vivid, while the bourbon casks add vanilla and coconut. Master Blender Adam Hannett oversees the series.
Pour a small measure neat and let it sit for a few minutes, then add water a little at a time to open up the sweetness under the smoke. It stands up to strong flavours such as smoked meats, blue cheese or dark chocolate.
- Super heavily peated Islay single malt, 101.4 PPM
- Aged five years in first-fill bourbon barrels
- Bottled at 59.3% ABV, un-chill filtered
Expect salted caramel, honeyed melon and apricot, followed by chocolate and coconut from the bourbon casks. Earthy minerality runs underneath, and the smoke lingers long into the finish.
A good pick for peat lovers and Octomore collectors who want the benchmark release of the latest series.
