Jack Daniel’s dates its Lynchburg distillery to 1866, and its whiskey is made from a mash of about 80% corn, 12% malted barley and 8% rye. Like all Tennessee whiskey, the new spirit is filtered through sugar maple charcoal before going into new charred American oak barrels, a step known as the Lincoln County Process. Gentleman Jack, introduced in 1988, repeats that charcoal filtering after maturation.
Sip it neat or over ice, or use it in an Old Fashioned or a whiskey and ginger ale. It suits barbecue, glazed ham and pecan pie.
