Description

Glendronach Portwood 700ml is a Highland single malt from The GlenDronach distillery in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The spirit is first matured in the distillery’s Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks, then given a second maturation in port pipes from the Douro Valley in Portugal. It carries no age statement and is bottled at 46% ABV.

The GlenDronach was founded in 1826 in the Valley of Forgue, which makes it one of the older working distilleries in the Highlands. Its name is tied to sherry casks, and most of its core range is built around rich, fruity spirit matured in Spanish oak. Portwood takes that familiar sherry character and adds a layer of red berry and plum from the port pipes.

Port casks tend to bring a softer, jammier fruit than sherry, so the two work together rather than against each other. The result keeps the depth GlenDronach drinkers expect while showing brighter red fruit and a gentle floral lift.

Pour it neat in a tulip glass and give it a few minutes to open, then try a few drops of water to bring out the fruit and spice. It suits dark chocolate, a blue cheese, fruit cake or a berry dessert after dinner.

  • Highland single malt from The GlenDronach, Aberdeenshire
  • Matured in PX and Oloroso sherry casks, then port pipes
  • Bottled at 46% ABV, no age statement

The producer describes a nose of Victoria plum, bramble and strawberry jam, with cherry blossom, honeysuckle, sandalwood and ginger underneath. The palate is layered with blackberry, roasted apple crumble and gingerbread, moving towards baked orange and black cherry. The finish lingers with orange peel, sultana and cherry cake.

A rich, fruit-led dram for sherry cask fans who want to try a port influence, and a considered gift for a single malt lover.
