Glenfiddich, Gaelic for valley of the deer, was built by William Grant and his family in Dufftown in Speyside, and the first spirit ran from its stills on Christmas Day 1887. The distillery is still owned by the Grant family’s company, William Grant & Sons, and it draws its water from the Robbie Dhu springs nearby.
The Experimental Series is where Glenfiddich tries new ideas with casks and blending. For Project XX, the 20 casks chosen were mostly ex-bourbon barrels, alongside a smaller number of sherry butts and port pipes. Each expert picked the cask they preferred on their own terms, so the final vatting brings together a wide range of styles from the same distillery. The name XX is the Roman numeral for 20.
Sip it neat to see how the different casks come together, then add a few drops of water, which the higher strength can take well. It also suits a single large ice cube, and pairs with roast pork, fruit-based desserts or a plate of hard cheeses.
- Speyside single malt from Glenfiddich, Dufftown
- 20 casks chosen by 20 whisky experts
- Bottled at 47% ABV, no age statement
Expect sweet orchard fruit, vanilla and a little spice on the nose. The palate is rich and creamy, with fruit, caramel and oak from the bourbon casks and darker fruit from the sherry and port, and the finish is long and warm.
Because each cask was chosen by a different person, Project XX is a good way to taste the range of characters that Glenfiddich spirit can take on in different casks.
A good fit for Glenfiddich fans who want something beyond the core age statements, and for single malt drinkers who enjoy a fuller strength whisky.
