The whiskey is made at the Jack Daniel Distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee, which dates its story to 1866. Like Old No. 7, it starts as a mash of corn, rye and malted barley. The new spirit is then mellowed drop by drop through around ten feet of sugar maple charcoal, the step that makes it Tennessee Whiskey rather than bourbon, before going into new charred American oak barrels.
For the single barrel range, the distillery’s tasting team picks out individual barrels that have developed more depth than usual. Those barrels are bottled on their own and not mixed with others, which is why small differences show from one bottling to the next. Single Barrel Select is also bottled at a higher strength than Old No. 7, giving it more weight and spice.
Master Distiller Chris Fletcher describes it as a robust, welcoming whiskey. The result keeps the familiar Jack Daniel’s sweetness but adds richer caramel, more oak and a fruitier edge.
