Beveridge, a geophysicist by training, began by making flavoured vodka infusions for friends before setting up a small distillery on the outskirts of Austin. He built his first pot still himself, and the brand grew slowly through bars and word of mouth into one of the most widely recognised vodkas in the United States.
Corn gives the spirit a soft, slightly sweet character, and pot stills, more often associated with whisky and cognac, are central to the brand’s approach. The vodka is distilled six times before it is brought to bottling strength. Pot stills work in batches rather than continuously, which takes more time but gives the distiller close control over each run.
The vodka is still made in Austin, and the brand keeps the Handmade name and plain, simple label it launched with in the late 1990s.
This large 1.75 litre bottle suits a home bar where vodka is a regular cocktail base, and it is the same vodka as the standard bottle.
Serve it chilled and neat, or make a vodka soda with lime, a Moscow mule, a Bloody Mary or a classic martini. It works with seafood, salty snacks and spicy food.
