About Glengoyne
Glengoyne began distilling in 1833, originally as Burnfoot distillery, at Dumgoyne below the Campsie Fells. The site sits on the Highland Line, so its stills are in the Highlands and its warehouses across the road in the Lowlands. The barley is dried with warm air rather than peat smoke, and the distillery runs its stills slowly to give a light, fruity spirit, much of it aged in sherry casks.
How to Enjoy Glengoyne
The 10 and 12 year olds are easy to enjoy neat or with a splash of water, and work well in a highball. Sip the 15, 18 and 21 slowly with dried fruit, nuts, dark chocolate or a cheese board.
Glengoyne FAQs
Is Glengoyne a Highland or Lowland whisky?
Glengoyne is officially a Highland single malt. The distillery sits right on the Highland Line north of Glasgow, so its stills are in the Highlands while its warehouses are just across the road in the Lowlands.
Is Glengoyne peated?
No. Glengoyne dries its barley with warm air instead of peat smoke, so the whisky has no smoky character. The flavour comes from slow distillation and the casks, giving fruit, honey and sherry notes.
Which Glengoyne should I try first?
Glengoyne 10 Year Old and 12 Year Old are the easiest starting points, with light fruit, toffee and apple notes. If you like richer, sherried whisky, step up to the 15 or 18 Year Old.
