Archie Rose was founded in 2014 by Will Edwards in Rosebery, in Sydney’s inner south. From the start the distillery has focused on Australian ingredients, and this single malt shows that approach clearly. Most Scotch single malts use one style of pale malted barley, while Archie Rose blends several roasted and specialty malts of the kind more often seen in brewing.
Those darker malts bring cocoa, coffee and nutty tones to the spirit, and the apera casks, an Australian take on sherry-style fortified wine, add dried fruit and jammy sweetness. The whisky matures in the maritime air of coastal Sydney before bottling at 46% ABV, a strength that keeps plenty of texture and flavour in the glass.
Sip it neat in a tulip glass, then add a few drops of water to open up the fruit. Archie Rose also suggests it for a Manhattan and for The Hemsworth, an Old Fashioned-style serve. Pair it with dark chocolate, roasted nuts or a sticky date pudding.

On the nose expect roasted pecans, chocolate pralines, blackberry compote and figs, with dried mango, coffee and cedar. The palate brings plum jam, chestnuts and cream, toffee, pineapple and browned butter. The finish shows dark chocolate with sea salt and marzipan, fading slowly into tropical fruit.
The result is a rich, layered malt that tastes clearly different from most Scotch, with roasted grain and fruit working together rather than one note leading.
A rewarding pick for whisky drinkers who want to try modern Australian single malt, and a thoughtful gift for someone who already enjoys Scotch.
