Description

Bruichladdich Black Art 10.1 is a 29 year old unpeated Islay single malt from the Bruichladdich distillery, bottled in 2022 at 45.1% ABV. The youngest whisky in it was distilled in 1993, and the casks used to make it are a closely kept secret known only to head distiller Adam Hannett.

Bruichladdich is a Victorian distillery built in 1881 on the shore of Loch Indaal, on the Rhinns of Islay. After a period of closure it was brought back to life in 2001, and much of its original Victorian equipment is still in use. While Islay is famous for heavily peated whisky, Bruichladdich’s own house style is unpeated, floral and fruity, made in tall copper stills.

Black Art is Bruichladdich’s most mysterious series. Each edition is a cryptic composition of old casks, matured entirely in the distillery’s Islay warehouses, and the recipe is never revealed. Adam Hannett worked with these casks in his early days in the warehouses under former Master Distiller Jim McEwan, and the job of hand-selecting and blending them now falls to him alone.

Because the youngest spirit was distilled in 1993, Black Art 10.1 draws on whisky made before the distillery’s 2001 revival. That gives it a rare link to an earlier era of Bruichladdich, with the decades in wood bringing deep fruit, spice and complexity to the unpeated spirit.

Pour it neat into a tulip glass and let it rest for several minutes. Taste it slowly, then try a few drops of water to see how it changes. It shines on its own, though dark chocolate or a few dried apricots make good companions.

  • Unpeated Islay single malt from Bruichladdich
  • 29 years old, youngest spirit distilled in 1993
  • Bottled in 2022 at 45.1% ABV

The nose offers chocolate praline, cedar and leather, then apricot jam, ripe melon, dark cherries and blackcurrant with lemon zest. The palate moves through orange barley sugar, ginger nut biscuit and lemon meringue to marzipan, vanilla, raisin and plum, with hints of iodine and coconut. The finish shows tablet and fudge, soft ripe fruit, a little tobacco and ginger.

A collector’s bottle for serious single malt drinkers and a memorable gift for a Bruichladdich devotee.
