Bunnahabhain was founded in 1881 on the north-east coast of Islay, in a sheltered bay near Port Askaig looking across the Sound of Islay to Jura. While the south of the island is known for heavily peated whisky, Bunnahabhain’s core range is made mostly from unpeated malt, so the sea air and sherry wood shape the flavour rather than smoke.
The 18 year old sits near the top of the core range. Long maturation lets the sherry influence build into dried fruit, toffee and nutty richness, while a light salty note is a reminder of where it comes from. Today it is bottled at 46.3% ABV, a little higher than older bottlings of the same age.
Serve it neat in a nosing glass and give it a few minutes to breathe, adding a drop of water if you like. It pairs well with salted caramel desserts, roasted nuts, a cheese board with aged gouda or a quiet after-dinner pour.
- Islay single malt from Bunnahabhain, Scotland
- Aged 18 years, sherry-led maturation, largely unpeated
- Bottled at 46.3% ABV, un-chill filtered, natural colour
The nose shows dried fruit, honeyed nuts and toffee, with hints of salted caramel and sticky toffee pudding. The palate brings sherried nuts, dried fruit and oak with a touch of salt, and the finish is long, dry and fruity, with spice and a coastal edge.
A rewarding bottle for single malt drinkers who enjoy rich sherry cask whisky, and a considered gift for a milestone or a collector of Islay whiskies.
