Description

Ca’ Del Bosco Extra Brut 2019 750ml is the 2019 Vintage Collection Extra Brut from Ca’ del Bosco in Lombardy, northern Italy, a vintage Franciacorta built on Chardonnay at 65%, Pinot Noir at 30% and Pinot Blanc at 5%. It carries the highest share of Pinot Noir among the 2019 Vintage Collection wines, which the winery says brings structure and character. This is Franciacorta, not Champagne.

Serve at about 10 degrees in a tulip glass, and open it around 10 minutes before pouring so the spice and citrus can settle. It has the weight for richer seafood, such as butter-poached crayfish or salmon, and it sits well alongside a simple roast chicken.

  • 2019 Franciacorta Millesimato, Lombardy
  • Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc
  • An average of 48 months on lees

One reviewer finds lime and white peach on the nose in the 2019, followed by ginger and star anise, with salty tension on the palate along with spice and fruit. The dosage is equivalent to 1.5 grams of sugar per litre, so the finish stays dry, with the Pinot Noir adding weight.

The Extra Brut came out of the 2017 harvest, one of the lowest yielding in fifty years. The balance of those grapes led the winery to permanently reduce its dosage at disgorgement, and this wine now completes the Vintage Collection next to Dosage Zéro and Satèn, giving three expressions of the same year.

The 2019 blends 27 base wines, from 18 Chardonnay vineyards in Erbusco, Adro, Cazzago San Martino, Corte Franca and Passirano, 7 Pinot Noir vineyards in Erbusco and Passirano, and 2 Pinot Blanc vineyards in Passirano. Grapes are chilled and sorted, then washed in the winery’s berry spa before crushing without oxygen. The musts ferment in small oak casks, with barrel maturation lasting 7 months, before moving by gravity into tanks.

Tirage took place in May 2020, followed by an average of 48 months on lees. Disgorgement is done without oxygen, using a system Ca’ del Bosco designed and patented to avoid oxidative stress and further sulphites.

A good match for drinkers who like a fuller, Pinot-driven sparkling wine with a dry finish, particularly at the dinner table.
