The Dalmore distillery stands on the Cromarty Firth at Alness in the northern Highlands, where whisky has been made since 1839. The Mackenzie family ran it for generations, and their clan crest gives The Dalmore its stag emblem. According to the clan story, in 1263 a Mackenzie ancestor saved King Alexander III of Scotland from a charging stag, and the king rewarded him with the right to bear a stag’s head on his arms. This whisky takes its name from that king.
Multi-cask whisky is central to the idea. Instead of finishing in one cask type, King Alexander III combines spirit matured in six different casks, which may include ex-bourbon barrels, sherry casks and wine casks, before the parcels are married together. Each cask adds its own layer, so the final whisky aims for complexity and balance rather than one dominant note. It sits within The Dalmore’s Principal Collection alongside the 18 and 21-year-old expressions, and is a long-standing part of the range.
Serve it neat or with a splash of water, or over a single large ice cube. It pairs well with dark chocolate, roast duck or a cheeseboard with dried fruit.
