Description
Deanston 15YO Tequila Cask Finish Single Malt Scotch Whisky 700ml is an experimental Highland single malt from Deanston that spent 13 years in traditional oak hogsheads before a further two years in casks that once held agave tequila from the Jaliscan Highlands of Mexico. It is bottled at 52.5% ABV, non-chill filtered and with no added colour, which leaves it a pale, natural hue.

Deanston distillery sits on the banks of the River Teith near the village of Doune, in a building that started life as an 18th-century cotton mill. It was converted into a distillery in the 1960s, and the river that once powered the mill still supplies water to the site.
The distillery describes this 15 year old as an experimental, limited-edition release. Tequila casks are rare in Scotch whisky, and the two-year finish adds a fruity, floral and citrus edge to Deanston’s honeyed, malty house style without covering the spirit underneath.
Sip it neat first, then add a little water, as the 52.5% strength softens and the citrus and agave notes open up. It goes well with grilled fish tacos, lime-dressed salads or a citrus tart, and makes an interesting talking point for a whisky tasting.
- Highland single malt from Deanston, Doune, Scotland
- 13 years in oak hogsheads, two years in Jaliscan tequila casks
- Bottled at 52.5% ABV, non-chill filtered, no added colour
Deanston describes it as a fruity, floral dram with sweet, warming notes. Expect citrus and orchard fruit on the nose with a soft herbal, agave note, followed by honey, malt and gentle spice on the palate and a warm, sweet finish.
The finish in ex-tequila wood is the point of interest here, so it rewards tasting side by side with a standard Deanston to see what the casks have added.
A curious choice for single malt drinkers who enjoy unusual cask finishes, and a thoughtful gift for a whisky fan who likes to try something different.
