Fettercairn 22YO Single Malt is a Highland single malt from Fettercairn distillery, matured for 22 years in first-fill American ex-bourbon casks. It is bottled at 47% ABV, without chill filtration and with natural colour, and is one of the older expressions in the distillery’s range.

Fettercairn distillery has made whisky since 1824 in the village of Fettercairn, at the foot of the Cairngorm mountains in the eastern Highlands. It is known for its cooling ring: cold mountain water runs down the outside of the spirit still’s neck during distillation, which encourages more of the heavier vapours to fall back and leaves a lighter, fruitier spirit. The unicorn on every bottle is the distillery’s emblem, and its whiskies are often described as tropical in character.
The 22-year-old was introduced in 2020 as part of the distillery’s refreshed range. Spending its whole life in first-fill American oak, which has only held bourbon once before, gives plenty of vanilla and spice while letting the distillery’s fruity spirit show through. Over 22 years the tropical notes of the younger whiskies deepen into darker fruit, coffee and treacle. Fettercairn is part of the Whyte and Mackay group, alongside The Dalmore and Jura distilleries.
Serve it neat in a tasting glass, adding a drop of water if you want to open up the fruit. It pairs well with a ginger loaf, a plum tart or dark chocolate.

Expect banana, citrus and plum on the nose, with raisin, fig and gingerbread behind. The palate moves through spiced pear, caramelised orange and coffee, and the finish brings liquorice, morello cherry and treacle.
