GlenDronach sits in the valley of Forgue in Aberdeenshire, in the eastern Highlands. James Allardice founded it in 1826, and over the years the distillery has become closely associated with sherry cask maturation. Much of its whisky is aged in Spanish oak casks that once held oloroso or Pedro Ximénez sherry, which give the spirit deep colour and flavours of dried fruit, chocolate and spice.
The 18-year-old carries the founder’s name and is one of the richest expressions in the core range. Its time in oloroso casks gives it a nutty, dried-fruit character, and bottling at 46% without chill filtration keeps the texture full. Small differences between batches are normal, as with any sherry cask whisky, but the style stays consistently rich and fruit-led. Since 2016 the distillery has been owned by Brown-Forman, which bought it together with BenRiach and Glenglassaugh, and the sherry-led house style has remained at the heart of the range.
Serve it neat in a tasting glass, with a drop of water if you like. It pairs well with Christmas cake, dark chocolate or a hard aged cheese with quince paste.
