Hibiki, which means resonance in Japanese, was first released in 1989 to mark Suntory’s 90th anniversary. The company began in Osaka in 1899, when Shinjiro Torii opened a shop selling imported wines, and its whisky story starts with Torii, who opened Yamazaki, Japan’s first malt whisky distillery, in 1923. Hibiki became Suntory’s flagship blend and is known for its 24-faceted bottle, each facet representing one of the 24 seasons of the traditional Japanese calendar.
Japanese Harmony is built around the idea of balance. Suntory’s chief blender selects from hundreds of malt samples from Yamazaki and Hakushu, each distillery bringing its own character, and pairs them with the soft, light grain whisky from Chita. The result is a blend where no single component dominates.
Enjoy it neat, on the rocks, or as a highball with chilled soda water and a twist of orange peel. It sits well with sushi, grilled chicken yakitori or dark chocolate after dinner. A large single ice cube keeps it cold without diluting it too quickly.
- Blend of Yamazaki and Hakushu malts with Chita grain whisky
- Matured in casks including Mizunara oak
- Bottled at 43% ABV
Expect rose, lychee and a hint of rosemary on the nose, with soft woodiness. The palate is honeyed and sweet, with candied orange peel and white chocolate, and the finish is gentle and long, with a touch of Mizunara spice.
A thoughtful gift for a whisky lover, and an elegant everyday pour for anyone who enjoys balanced, fragrant blends.
