Description
Laphroaig 10YO Cask Strength 700ml is a heavily peated Islay single malt Scotch whisky aged for ten years and bottled at full cask strength. It is the same 10 year old whisky as the standard Laphroaig, but bottled straight from the cask without being reduced with water and without chill filtration, so the strength varies from batch to batch and is shown on each label.

Laphroaig was founded in 1815 by the Johnston brothers on the south coast of Islay, facing the sea. The distillery still malts part of its own barley on traditional malting floors and dries it over fires of local Islay peat, which gives the whisky its intense smoky, maritime character. The spirit is matured in ex-bourbon barrels, adding vanilla and sweetness to balance the smoke.
Bottling at cask strength keeps all the oils and flavour compounds that are usually reduced, so this release is fuller and more intense than the standard 10 year old. Laphroaig releases it in numbered batches, and whisky fans often compare one batch with the next.
Pour a small measure neat first, then add water a little at a time; the smoke softens and sweeter notes come forward as it opens up. It pairs well with smoked meats, oysters, blue cheese or dark chocolate.
- Islay single malt aged 10 years
- Bottled at cask strength, non-chill filtered
- Matured in ex-bourbon barrels
Expect thick peat smoke, iodine and sea salt on the nose with vanilla underneath. The palate is big and oily, with smoke, liquorice, toffee and a little citrus, and the finish is very long, smoky and warming.
A good pick for peat lovers who enjoy the standard Laphroaig 10 and want it at full strength, or for whisky drinkers who like to control the strength with water.
