Description

Pol Roger Brut Reserve NV 750ml is the core non-vintage Champagne from Pol Roger, a family-owned house in Épernay. It is an equal blend of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay from 30 crus, and about 25% of it is reserve wine held back from earlier harvests to keep the style consistent from year to year.

Pour it at around 8 to 10°C in a tulip glass. Pol Roger recommends it either as an apéritif or with a whole meal, so try it with a prawn starter, then with chicken in a light cream sauce.

  • Non-vintage Brut, about 25% reserve wine
  • Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay in equal parts
  • About four years ageing in the house cellars

Golden straw in colour with plenty of fine bubbles, the wine opens with pear and mango, then honeysuckle, white jasmine, vanilla and brioche. On the palate come quince jelly, apricot jam, beeswax and acacia honey, with enough freshness to balance the richness, and a long finish of candied orange peel, tangerine, cardamom and anise.

Each grape has a job in this blend. Pinot Noir from the Montagne de Reims gives structure and body. Pinot Meunier, grown in the Vallée de la Marne and around Épernay, adds freshness and fruit. Chardonnay from Épernay and the Côte des Blancs brings aromatic complexity and elegance. The house aims for the same style and quality each year.

Second fermentation takes place in bottle in cellars 33 metres below street level, where the temperature stays cool and steady. After about four years the bottles are riddled by hand, disgorged and rested for at least three months before release. Sir Winston Churchill was among the house’s loyal customers, and he described its address as the most drinkable in the world.

A dependable bottle to keep on hand for anyone who wants a classic, three-grape Champagne from a family house.
