Tamdhu distillery stands near Knockando in Speyside and has been making whisky since 1897. For decades most of its spirit went into blends, and the distillery was closed in 2010 before Ian Macleod Distillers bought it and restarted production in 2013. The new owners made sherry cask maturation the centre of the Tamdhu single malt range.
The 12 Year Old was launched in 2018 to replace the earlier 10 year old as the core of the range. Using a mix of first-fill and refill casks, and both American and European oak, lets the sherry influence come through without hiding the fruity Speyside spirit underneath.
Serve it neat in a tulip glass, or add a splash of water to open up the fruit and spice. It also works over a single large ice cube, and pairs well with fruit cake, dark chocolate or a cheeseboard.

Expect cinnamon rolls, orange boiled sweets and sweet oak with raisins on the nose, plus a faint hint of mint. The palate brings banana, berry jam and malt biscuit with sherry oak depth, and the finish shows ground spice, dried fruit, soft Scottish tablet and the lightest whisper of smoke.
A good pick for anyone who enjoys sherried Speyside whisky, and a tidy gift for a single malt drinker.
