The Teeling name has deep roots in Dublin whiskey. Walter Teeling set up a distillery on Marrowbone Lane in the Liberties in 1782, and more than two centuries later his descendants Jack and Stephen Teeling founded the Teeling Whiskey Company. In 2015 they opened the Teeling distillery in Newmarket, the first new distillery in Dublin in 125 years.
Teeling is known for experimenting with casks, from rum and red wine to Japanese shochu. This release takes that thinking to New Zealand. The single malt spent around sixteen years in ex-bourbon barrels before a final period of about twelve months in a barrel that had previously held Akarua red wine, cask number 76413. That makes it roughly seventeen years old at bottling.
Central Otago Pinot Noir is known for ripe red cherry and plum fruit with savoury spice, and a short finish in one of those barrels lays a layer of red fruit and gentle tannin over the honeyed, vanilla-rich base that long bourbon cask maturation gives Irish malt.
As a single cask, every bottle comes from cask 76413 alone, so check the label for the exact strength. Sip it neat at first, then add a few drops of water. It goes well with lamb, duck, aged cheese or dark chocolate, and is worth sharing with anyone who knows Central Otago wine.
