Description

The Botanist Gin 1L is an Islay dry gin made by the Bruichladdich distillery on the Isle of Islay, Scotland, the island best known for its peated single malts. It is distilled with 31 botanicals, 22 of them hand-foraged on Islay alongside nine classic gin botanicals, and bottled at 46% ABV.

The gin was introduced in 2011 and is distilled in a Lomond pot still that came from the old Inverleven distillery, nicknamed Ugly Betty. The still runs slowly, with a single batch taking many hours, which lets the more delicate botanicals come through. Some of the botanicals are held in a basket so the rising vapour picks up their aromas rather than boiling them.

The 22 Islay botanicals are gathered by professional foragers from the island’s hills, shores and peat bogs. The name The Botanist honours two local botanists who helped develop the recipe with Bruichladdich’s former master distiller, Jim McEwan.

The result is a gin that keeps a classic juniper backbone but layers in a lot of floral, herbal and citrus detail. It has grown into one of the best-selling premium gins in the world, and this larger 1 litre bottle suits households that use it regularly for G&Ts and cocktails.

Serve it in a large glass over plenty of ice with a premium tonic and a twist of lemon peel or a sprig of fresh herbs. The extra strength also makes it a great base for a dry martini, a Negroni or a Tom Collins, and it sits well with oysters, smoked salmon or a light seafood starter.

  • Islay dry gin from Bruichladdich, Scotland
  • 31 botanicals, 22 hand-foraged on Islay
  • Distilled in the Ugly Betty Lomond still, 46% ABV

On the nose expect juniper with fresh mint, citrus and meadow flowers. The palate is full and layered, moving from citrus and menthol through herbal and floral notes with a little sweetness, finishing long, dry and gently spicy.

A strong choice for gin drinkers who enjoy a complex, botanical-led style, or for anyone keeping a quality gin on hand for cocktails at home.
