Whiskey has been made in Tullamore since 1829, when a distillery was set up in the town. Daniel Edmund Williams later rose to general manager and then owner, and expanded the business considerably. The brand name comes from his initials, D.E.W., which is why the whiskey is still written as Tullamore D.E.W. on the label.
The original Tullamore distillery closed in the mid twentieth century, and for decades the whiskey was produced elsewhere in Ireland. William Grant and Sons bought the brand in 2010 and opened a new distillery on the outskirts of Tullamore in 2014, bringing whiskey production back to the town after around sixty years.
The 12 Year Old sits above the standard Original blend in the range. It combines three styles of Irish whiskey: single pot still, made from malted and unmalted barley, single malt, and grain whiskey. The higher proportion of pot still and malt gives it more body and spice than younger blends, while the sherry casks add dried fruit and richness.
Pour it neat or with a splash of water to open up the sherry fruit, or over a large ice cube. It pairs well with dark chocolate, fruit cake or a mature cheddar, and also makes a fuller-flavoured Irish coffee.
- Blended Irish whiskey from Tullamore D.E.W., Ireland
- Aged at least 12 years in ex-bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks
- Triple distilled, bottled at 40% ABV
Expect toasted oak, vanilla and honey on the nose with a little dried fruit. The palate brings sherry-soaked raisins, toffee and gentle spice from the pot still whiskey, finishing warm, nutty and lightly oaky.
A considered choice for Irish whiskey drinkers ready to move up from a standard blend, and a good gift for anyone who enjoys a sherry-cask style.
