Benriach was founded in 1898 by John Duff on the site of the old Riach farm in the north of Speyside. Just two years later the Pattison Crash shut it down, and although its floor maltings kept supplying malted barley to neighbouring Longmorn, the stills did not run again until 1965. In the early 1970s the distillery began making some peated spirit in the old nineteenth-century style, a rare move in Speyside, and today it makes classic unpeated, peated and triple distilled whisky.
The distillery’s warehouses hold one of the more varied cask collections in Scotland, including Warehouse 13, an original dunnage warehouse from 1898. For its older whiskies, Benriach matures spirit in four different cask types and then marries them, a process overseen by Master Blender Dr Rachel Barrie. After a quarter of a century, the gentle Speyside smoke has mellowed and woven into the fruit, malt and oak, turning into a rich, caramelised smoke.
The Madeira casks are what set this whisky apart from the 21 year old. Madeira is a fortified wine from the Portuguese island of the same name, and its casks add baked fruit and a gentle nutty richness to the honeyed malt and toasted oak.
Serve it neat in a tulip glass and allow time for it to open, then add a drop or two of water if you like. It pairs well with a cheeseboard, a walnut tart or dark chocolate after dinner.
