J. Painturaud Cognac Grande Champagne XO (Gift Box) 700ml is a Grande Champagne XO cognac from the Painturaud family estate in Segonzac, France. The youngest eau-de-vie in the blend has spent more than 25 years in French oak barrels, and it is bottled at 40% ABV.

The Painturaud estate covers about 40 hectares in the heart of Grande Champagne, the premier cru of Cognac, on clay-limestone and chalky soils. Its roots go back to 1804, and the vineyard was rebuilt late in the 19th century after the phylloxera crisis. In 1934 Jacques-Guy Painturaud began selling cognac under the family name, and in 2010 a new generation of four family members took over management.
The family grows mainly Ugni Blanc, with some Colombard and Montils, and distils on the lees in traditional Charentais copper stills. The eaux-de-vie age in French oak in small, humid cellars on the estate. The estate holds High Environmental Value (HVE) level 3 certification.
Serve it neat in a tulip glass at room temperature, warming it gently in your hand and giving it time to open. It goes well with dark chocolate, aged comté, or a strong after-dinner coffee.

The colour is light amber with copper highlights. On the nose there are white flowers, cinnamon and nutmeg, opening to mellow wood, musk and a hint of leather. The palate shows candied fruit, mandarin marmalade and melted caramel, and the long finish brings mocha, spice and a subtle rancio note.
A fine choice for cognac drinkers who value grower-made spirit with real age, and a well-presented gift in its box for a special occasion.
