The Isle of Jura is one of Scotland’s most sparsely populated islands, and the distillery sits in its only village, Craighouse. Distilling here dates back to 1810, and the modern distillery was rebuilt in the 1960s with tall stills that give Jura its lighter, rounded spirit. Jura is known for pairing that spirit with a wide range of finishing casks, and the 18 Year Old shows how well its spirit handles long ageing.
The long time in bourbon wood brings vanilla, toffee and nutty depth, while the Bordeaux red wine casks add red fruit and a gentle spice. Some tasters also note a soft wisp of smoke in the background, which keeps the sweetness in check.
