Tobermory Distillery was founded in 1798 by John Sinclair in the harbour town of Tobermory, and it is one of the older distilleries in Scotland. It has been through several closures and changes of owner over the centuries, and the site itself was once called Ledaig, from the Gaelic for safe haven. Today the distillery makes two styles: unpeated spirit sold as Tobermory and peated spirit sold as Ledaig.
The Ledaig style uses heavily peated malted barley, which gives a smoky, maritime character that is often compared with Islay malts, though with its own savoury, peppery personality. Ten years in cask rounds out the smoke and adds sweetness, and bottling at 46.3% without chill filtration keeps the texture full and oily in the glass.
Try it neat first, then add a little water to soften the smoke and bring out the sweeter notes. It goes well with smoked salmon, oysters, strong blue cheese or a peppered steak, and a splash over ice suits a warmer evening.
- Peated single malt from Tobermory Distillery, Isle of Mull
- Aged for 10 years
- Bottled at 46.3% ABV, non-chill filtered
Expect peat smoke and sea air on the nose with a sweet, toffee edge. The palate brings smoke, toffee and spice, with savoury, maritime notes, and the finish is long, smoky and peppery.
A strong pick for peated whisky fans who want an island malt from outside Islay, or a gift for someone who enjoys smoky Scotch.
