Rémy Martin was founded in 1724 in Cognac by a young vine grower of the same name. In 1738 King Louis XV granted the house a royal accord allowing it to plant new vines, a rare honour at a time when new planting was restricted. In the 1840s Paul-Emile Rémy Martin added the centaur emblem to the bottles, a nod to Sagittarius, his star sign, and it still appears on every bottle today.
The house has long focused on Fine Champagne cognac. This official designation covers blends of Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne eaux-de-vie only, with at least half from Grande Champagne. The chalky soils of these two crus give long-lived, aromatic spirits that suit extended ageing in oak.
Rémy Martin XO was created in 1981 by cellar master André Giraud. The eaux-de-vie are aged in Limousin oak casks, where part of the spirit evaporates over the years as the angels’ share, and the cellar master blends hundreds of them to keep the house style consistent. The brand is part of the Rémy Cointreau group.
Serve it neat in a tulip glass at room temperature, or over ice as an aperitif, as the house suggests. It also makes a rich Old Fashioned, and pairs well with dark chocolate, roasted nuts, aged cheese or a fruit tart.
- XO Fine Champagne cognac from Rémy Martin
- Grande and Petite Champagne grapes, aged in Limousin oak

The colour is a deep mahogany. On the nose expect flowers and ripe fruit, followed by plum and candied orange on the palate, then spice and hazelnut. The finish is long, with roasted cocoa and honeyed gingerbread, and the body is full and smooth.
A considered gift for cognac lovers and a fine bottle to open on a special occasion.
