The Teeling name has deep roots in Dublin whiskey. Walter Teeling set up a distillery on Marrowbone Lane in the Liberties in 1782, and more than two centuries later his descendants Jack and Stephen Teeling founded the Teeling Whiskey Company. In 2015 they opened the Teeling distillery in Newmarket, the first new distillery in Dublin in 125 years.
Released in 2021, the 13 year old was only the second Teeling single grain, following the core Single Grain first released in 2013. Jack Teeling has pointed out that most Irish whiskey sold is actually grain whiskey, hidden inside big-brand blends. Teeling set out to show what grain can do on its own, and this older bottling, with its long bourbon and red wine cask maturation, is a clear example.
The bourbon barrels build a base of sweet vanilla, caramel and buttery oak. The Bordeaux casks then add red berry, soft orchard fruit and a gentle tannic grip, giving more structure than most grain whiskeys. Bottling at 50% keeps the texture rich and the flavours concentrated.
Try it neat first, then with a few drops of water to bring out the berry fruit. It works well with charcuterie, roast duck or a berry tart, and makes a fruity base for a Whiskey Sour.
- Irish single grain from Teeling, distilled mainly from maize
- Nine years in ex-bourbon, over four in ex-Bordeaux red wine casks
- Aged 13 years, 50% ABV, non-chill filtered
The nose brings summer fruits, berry jam and vanilla cream with soft orchard fruit and honey. The palate is sweet and rounded, with ripe fruit and toasted cinnamon, and the finish shows spice, dry tannins and lingering warm oak.
A rewarding bottle for Irish whiskey drinkers curious about older grain whiskey, or anyone who enjoys red wine cask maturation.
