The Teeling name has deep roots in Dublin whiskey. Walter Teeling set up a distillery on Marrowbone Lane in the Liberties in 1782, and more than two centuries later his descendants Jack and Stephen Teeling founded the Teeling Whiskey Company. In 2015 they opened the Teeling distillery in Newmarket, the first new distillery in Dublin in 125 years.
Teeling has built a reputation for single grain. The core Single Grain, first released in 2013, uses red wine casks, and the 13 year old followed in 2021 with Bordeaux red wine casks. The 15 year old takes a different path, using white wine casks to bring fresh, bright fruit to an older grain spirit, a combination that is rarely seen in Irish whiskey.
The bourbon maturation lays down sweet vanilla, caramel and buttery oak. The Sauvignon Blanc casks then add green apple, light citrus and orange blossom. At 50% ABV, the whiskey keeps the natural viscosity and sweetness of the grain while drawing more flavour from the wood, giving a full-bodied single grain. It comes with an embossed phoenix label and a tube made from recyclable FSC cardboard.
Pour it neat or with a splash of water. It also makes a crisp highball with soda and a twist of lemon, and goes well with seafood, a soft goat’s cheese or an apple tart.
