The Teeling name has deep roots in Dublin whiskey. Walter Teeling set up a distillery on Marrowbone Lane in the Liberties in 1782, and more than two centuries later his descendants Jack and Stephen Teeling founded the Teeling Whiskey Company. In 2015 they opened the Teeling distillery in Newmarket, the first new distillery in Dublin in 125 years.
The Explorers Series celebrates Irish explorers who travelled the world, and each edition uses casks or spirits that capture another nation’s character. The Japanese Edition followed a Brazilian Edition aged with Amburana wood, and it was the first in the series released outside travel retail.
Shochu is a traditional Japanese spirit, and in Japan it is drunk more widely than sake. Mugi means barley: mugi shochu is fermented with koji, distilled in a pot still and then matured in Japanese oak, giving a light yet fruity spirit. Four years in those casks adds a delicate, fragrant layer to the soft, sweet Irish whiskey. The tube and label carry Japanese-inspired artwork to reflect the meeting of the two cultures.
Sip it neat to pick up the floral notes, or add a splash of water. It also makes a refined highball with chilled soda, and pairs well with sushi, grilled fish or a fruit pastry.
