Description
Archie Rose Single Paddock Whisky Rye Malt Harvest 700ml 2018 is a rye malt whisky made from a single paddock of heritage rye grown at Wongabeena Farm in Barellan, New South Wales. The Whytcross family grew the rye without irrigation through the 2018 drought, and the whisky was the first release in Archie Rose’s vintage Harvest series. It is bottled unfiltered at a natural cask strength of 61.6% ABV.

The grain was semi-fermented and malted three ways before brewing: a light-kilned heritage rye malt, an amber rye malt given extended kilning and a roasted chocolate rye malt, used alongside pale malt. Fermentation was finished with a saison yeast strain, a yeast more often linked with Belgian farmhouse ales.
Archie Rose was founded in Sydney in 2014 by Will Edwards and has worked closely with farmers to grow grain to its own specifications. In 2021 the distillery moved to 100 per cent locally sourced whisky malts. This Harvest release shows that focus clearly, tracing the whisky back to one paddock, one farm and one growing season.
At this strength, add water a few drops at a time to find the balance you like, and give the glass a few minutes to open up. Serve it neat in a tulip glass after dinner with dark chocolate, roasted pecans or a hard aged cheese.

Mandarin, yuzu and Anzac biscuit greet you on the nose, followed by orchard fruit, begonia blossom and huon pine, then roasted pecans, mulberry and caraway seed. The palate is rich and mouth-filling, with nectarine, berries and ginger snap over roasted grain, milk chocolate and oak, and the finish lingers with orchard fruit, chocolate-coated Anzac biscuit and blossom.
A bottle for rye whisky fans and anyone interested in how a single farm and season can shape a spirit.
